Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week starts Monday 14 September and runs through until Sunday 20 September. This year's focus is Te Reo Towns, celebrating the communities that have kept te reo Māori alive and encouraging all of Aotearoa to make te reo more visible, heard, and used in everyday life.
With each day having a specific theme, the idea is that every community, workplace, marae, school and whānau has a role to play in the future of te reo Māori.
Here are some easy ideas to incorporate more te reo into your work and home life:
🔴 Learn one new kupu each day and use it in conversation
🔴 Run a friendly reo challenge in your teams during the week
🔴 Use te reo greetings when you answer the phone or in your emails
🔴 Practice counting in te reo Māori - great to do with your mokopuna at home
🔴 Label household items with their te reo names
🔴 Listen to waiata Māori or a Māori language podcast during your commute.
We all have a role to play in ensuring that te reo Māori remains a visible, valued everyday part of life in Aotearoa so get involved this week and support this important kaupapa.
As part of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, we talked to some of our Kia Puāwai kaimahi to share their personal journeys with te reo and te ao Māori. In the video below, our Tumu Whakarae | Chief Executive Neil Brand shares what te reo Māori means to him and the role it plays in shaping who we are as an organisation.
