Kotahitanga in Waitangi

Last week some of the Kia Puāwai kaimahi were lucky enough to undertake a haerenga up to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to be present on Wednesday 4 February for the Kiingitanga pōwhiri, and Thursday 5 February for the pōwhiri for the Government. These two days are crucial for kōrero, whanaungatanga, political forums, and learning what Waitangi is all about without the huge crowds.

Our Principal Practice Advisor Wes shares his reflections: "Being at Waitangi in 2026 was a special and grounding experience. Seeing children laughing as they jumped from the bridge between Paihia and the Treaty Grounds, alongside whānau who had travelled from across Aotearoa and overseas, reminded me of the strength that comes from gathering together as a community.

What stood out most was the contrast between the pōwhiri held over the two days. The Kiingitanga pōwhiri was filled with aroha, pride, and a strong sense of unity between Tainui and Ngāpuhi could be felt by everyone present. The pōwhiri the following day, welcoming the Prime Minister and Members of Parliament, carried a different energy, with kōrero often reflecting the tensions and conversations leading into the upcoming election.

One whakaaro that resonated was shared by Kura Moeahu, QSO, who spoke of a possible hīkoi before the election to encourage whānau to enrol and have a plan to vote. If realised, this would be a powerful way of strengthening community voice and participation. Waitangi 2026 was a reminder of the importance of coming together, listening, and taking collective action."

We hope you had a relaxing and meaningful Waitangi Day, wherever you happened to be across the country.
