Puanga: the start of the Māori New Year for many iwi

This Matariki we're sharing this special kōrero with our Kaumātua Pita on Puanga, filmed in 2025.

Puanga, known as the star Rigel, ascends in the eastern sky before dawn during winter - much like Matariki.

For some iwi and hapū across Aotearoa, Puanga marks the start of the Māori New Year instead of Matariki. While the meaning and rituals are closely aligned, the differences reflect local traditions and perspectives.

This is a time to honour those who’ve passed, celebrate the present, and set intentions for what’s ahead.

Mānawatia a Matariki! ✨
